Working hard and improving are main focuses for Tigers catcher Alex Avila

As the Tigers get set for spring training next month, Avila will be trying to earn a spot on Detroit’s 25-man Opening Day roster. Avila, who turns 23 on Friday, will likely compete with offseason acquisition Robinzon Diaz for a spot in the majors as the second catcher.

“Really what I’m thinking is just to continue and work hard and improve,” Avila said on Thursday during the Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan stop at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. “As far as being on the team or wherever I’ll be, that’s obviously out of my control.” Continue reading

New addition Schlereth happy to be a Tiger

While Schlereth didn’t have a choice in his destination, he is more than satisfied with being acquired by the Tigers. The 23-year old hard-throwing pitcher has ties to Michigan with his fiancee having graduated from Grand Ledge High School and his future in-laws residing in Ionia.
